How People Are Helping
Deanne Goodman put her artistic talents to work for the March of Dimes. She created a hand made, limited edition 1938 Mercury Dime necklace. All proceeds from the sales go to the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes Making A Difference

March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

Parent Education
The March of Dimes helps pregnant women know what to worry about and what not to worry about when it comes to having a healthy baby.

Premature Birth
Each year, more than 460,000 babies are born too soon, some so small they can fit in the palm of a hand.  Many of these babies must fight just to survive; others will struggle with lifelong health problems. No one knows what causes half of all premature births. No one is working harder than the March of Dimes to find out.

Genetic Research
Genetic birth defects leave our children unable to walk, to hear, to think, or even to fight off disease. March of Dimes investments in genetic research already are starting to yield results. Two March of Dimes-funded grantees have used gene therapy successfully in treating hemophilia and retinitis pigmentosa in the lab, giving hope that we are closer to a cure for these genetic birth defects.

Health Care
No parents should have to choose between feeding their child and buying the medicines he or she needs.  Yet, this happens every day in America because more than 9 million children have no health coverage. For many of these children, this means they cant get preventive checkups, immunizations, or treatment for common childhood illnesses. The March of Dimes is fighting so that all babies, children and pregnant women get health insurance.

The Only Question Is ...

Why Not?

The March of Dimes is a leader and pioneer in the fight to save babies. We have an outstanding track record of success and we are prepared to accomplish even greater things in the future to solve the problems of prematurity, birth defects, and low birthweight.

Walking For The March of Dimes
Over hundreds of people show up every year to participate in the March of Dimes Walk Across America. This event has become so popular over the years that many schools across the United States help sponser it. We know that many adults have very busy schedules, but if you could just take an hour to an hour or two out of your day to participate in this wonderful event, you would be helping so many children who are born prematurely. What better reason is there than that? The March of Dimes Walk Across America starts in the spring.

Did You Know...
Did you know that one out of eight women give birth too early? This means that there could be something wrong with the baby and it could possibly not make it through its first year in life. The March of Dimes was established to help prevent a tradgedy, like this, from happening. By making a donation, you are giving life. What kind of gift in this world is better than that?

Birth Defects

About 150,000 babies are born each year with birth defects. The parents of one out of every 28 babies receive the frightening news that their baby has a birth defect.

A birth defect is an abnormality of structure, function or metabolism (body chemistry) present at birth that results in physical or mental disability, or is fatal. Several thousand different birth defects have been identified. Birth defects are the leading cause of death in the first year of life.

What Causes Birth Defects?
Both genetic and environmental factors can cause birth defects. However, the causes of about 60 to 70 percent of birth defects currently are unknown.

A single abnormal gene can cause birth defects. Every human being has at least 30,000 to 35,000 genes that determine traits like eye and hair color, as well as direct the growth and development of every part of our physical and biochemical systems. Genes are packaged into each of the 46 chromosomes inside our cells.

We're helping the future of our world ... one little one at a time!
